Your Workplacea account: sync, devices, and managing resumes

Workplacea team5 min read

A Workplacea account is optional but useful: without one, everything you build saves to your browser; with one, your resumes sync to the cloud and follow you across devices. This article explains exactly where your data lives in each mode, what happens at the moment you sign in, and how to organize, duplicate, and delete the resumes you accumulate along the way.

Guest mode versus signed in

Workplacea runs in two modes, and the difference is purely about where data is stored:

  • Guest mode (no account). Your resumes save to your browser's local storage on the device you're using. This is real persistence — close the tab, restart the computer, come back next week, and your work is there. But it is tied to that browser on that device: a different browser, a private window, or another computer won't see it, and clearing your browser data erases it.
  • Signed in. Your resumes save to the cloud under your account. Any device you sign in on sees the same, current set of resumes. Edits save continuously as you type — there is no save button to remember and no "unsynced changes" state to manage.

Everything else is identical between modes: the full editor, the score, all four templates, tailoring, and watermark-free PDF export. The free tier's limits — one resume plus one tailored variant — apply either way; see the free plan explainer.

What happens when you first sign in

Signing in triggers a one-time migration: any drafts you created as a guest in that browser are moved into your account automatically. You'll see a confirmation toast on the dashboard, such as "1 local draft moved to your account". Moved means moved — the drafts become cloud resumes and are no longer stranded in local storage, so from that point on they sync everywhere you sign in.

Practical implication: if you've been working as a guest on your laptop, just sign in on that same laptop first. Sign in on a new device before migrating and the account will look empty — your drafts are still waiting in the original browser and will migrate the next time you sign in there.

To sign in, use the "Sign in" link in the dashboard header; "Sign out" lives in the same spot once you're in. Signing out returns that browser to guest mode — your cloud resumes stay safe in the account and reappear when you sign back in.

Organizing multiple resumes and variants

The dashboard shows every resume as a card with a live thumbnail, a score chip, and when it was last edited. Two kinds of cards exist:

  • Base resumes — your primary documents.
  • Tailored variants — job-specific copies created with "Save as variant" in the Tailor drawer. These display a chip like "variant · Acme" naming the company or role they target, and stay linked to the base resume they came from. The tailoring guide covers the workflow.

Keeping the base clean and letting variants absorb job-specific edits is the intended pattern: your base is the long-lived source of truth, variants are disposable per application.

Duplicating, renaming, and deleting

  • Duplicate. Open the card's actions menu (the three-dot button) and choose "Duplicate". You get an exact copy with "(copy)" appended to its title — useful before a big restructure you might regret.
  • Rename. A resume's title is its internal name (like "Backend Engineer — Stripe") and is editable in the editor. The title is for your dashboard only; it never appears on the printed resume.
  • Delete. The actions menu's "Delete" removes the resume. Deletion is how you reclaim your free-plan slot — and it is genuinely removal, not archival.
  • Archive. Not yet available. Today's options are keep, duplicate, or delete. If you want an off-platform backup before deleting something, export it to PDF first.

Changing your email and recovering access

Sign-in is email-based. If you need to change the email on your account or you've lost access to your sign-in email, contact us at contact@workplacea.com from whichever address you can, and we'll verify ownership and sort it out. If you simply can't sign in right now but need your resume today, remember that any device where you previously worked as a guest still has those local drafts available without an account.

Deleting resumes and your account

Your data is yours to remove, at two levels:

  1. Delete a resume. The card menu's "Delete" removes that resume. If you're signed in, it's removed from the cloud; in guest mode, from your browser's storage.
  2. Delete your account. This removes your account and everything stored under it — resumes, variants, and attached job descriptions. Email contact@workplacea.com from your account address to request it. Gone means gone: account deletion is not a soft-hide, and we don't retain your resume content afterward.

The wider picture of what's stored, what AI processing sees, and what we never do with your data is in privacy and your data.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose anything by staying in guest mode?

No features, no score detail, no export quality. What you give up is durability and portability: your work lives in one browser, where a cleared cache or a lost laptop takes it with it. If a resume matters, sign in or at least keep a PDF export somewhere safe.

Can I use the same account on multiple devices at once?

Yes. Sign in anywhere and your resumes are there, current as of your latest edit. Continuous saving means the usual multi-device workflow — desk at home, laptop at the library — just works, though editing the same resume simultaneously on two machines at once isn't a supported pattern.

I signed in and my dashboard is empty. Where are my drafts?

Almost certainly on the device where you created them. Guest drafts migrate when you sign in from the browser that holds them. Go back to that browser, sign in there, and watch for the "moved to your account" confirmation — then they'll appear everywhere.

Does signing out delete my local drafts?

Signing out simply ends the session. Cloud resumes remain in your account; the browser returns to guest mode. Any new work you do while signed out is local again and will migrate the next time you sign in.

Manage it all from the dashboard

Everything in this article starts at the editor — cards, menus, sign in, and sign out are all on that one screen. For account changes we can't self-serve yet, like email changes or full account deletion, email contact@workplacea.com and we'll take care of it.
